The efficiency of various skin care products was investigated comparat
ively on human tissue and pig skin in vitro. It was assessed, whether
the histological changes caused by different chemicals could be inhibi
ted by application of skin care products. Sodium hydroxide and sodium
laurylsulfate as hydrophilic irritants, cyclohexanone and xylole as li
pophilic irritants were investigated. The skin care products were Marl
y Skin, Eucerin cum aqua, Taktosan ointment, Kosmosan ointment, PEG oi
ntment, Arretil and Travabon ointment. Some preparations did not provi
de the protection for which they were designed. Other have built up an
effective diffusion barrier beyond their indication. The results on p
ig skin showed no close correlation to the conditions on human skin.
