The reaction of dimethyltin(IV) dichloride with N'-phenylpyridine-2-ca
rbaldimine results in the formation of the monomeric 1:1 complex, hyl(
N'-phenylpyridine-2-carbaldimine-N,N')tin(IV), Me2SnCl2(C6H5N = CHC5H4
N-2). The ligand coordinates to the tin atom in the dichlorodimethylti
n(IV) moiety through its pyridyl and imine nitrogen atoms conferring a
distorted octahedral geometry to the tin atom. The two methyl groups
are trans with respect to each other whilst the two chlorine atoms occ
upy cis positions. The bond length between the tin and the imine nitro
gen atom is 2.540(5) angstrom whereas that of the pyridyl nitrogen ato
m to the tin atom is 2.439(4) angstrom.
