The kinetics of methanol oxidation to methyl formate by oxygen is stud
ied over a giant palladium cluster with an idealized formula Pd561Phen
60(OAc)180. The rate of methyl formate formation is proportional to th
e concentrations of the cluster and methanol. The rate dependence on t
he oxygen concentration is described by the Michaelis-Menten equation.
The kinetic data obtained and the values of kinetic isotopic effects
k(CH3OH)/k(CH3OD) = 0.98 and k(CH3OH)/k(CD3OD) = 5.9 are in agreement
with the reaction mechanism including, as a rate-determining step, the
C-H bond breaking in the methanol molecule coordinated by the cluster
.
