Abstract
A new mathematical model has been developed to predict the effluent qu ality of horizontal filters which provide a longer filter runs resulti ng in backwash water economy in comparison to conventional co-current rapid filters. The predictions closely match the observed data which j ustifies the robustness of the presented model. Advance effluent quali ty predictions can greatly benefit a filter operator in optimising fil ter backwashing.
