We report on a large volume, high-pressure, TPC-like xenon gas scintil
lation counter for X-ray spectroscopy in the range 60-511 keV. The UV
scintillation light is detected with a low-pressure two stage proporti
onal counter using a CsI photocathode. The detector has excellent ener
gy and time resolutions. The location of the absorbed quanta can be ac
curately determined in all three dimensions. Furthermore the 3D topolo
gical information of the deposited primary charges provides an efficie
nt means for the suppression of the Compton background present in many
close ion-atom collision experiments.
