New high rate multiwire gas proportional counters for X-ray detection
under development at Daresbury require low noise, fast preamplifiers t
o achieve minimum dead time. We present a design for a fast preamplifi
er with a rise time of 8 ns, noise better than 1300 electrons rms and
a gain of 4.8 muV per electron. Results of a computer simulation run t
o predict the optimum differentiate constant needed to ensure a short
dead time are also presented. The application of this preamplifier on
a fast multiwire linear detector is discussed and results are presente
d.
