In this work we describe the experimental tests of a new approach to t
he fast digital readout of MWPCs: electronic subdivision of the cathod
e strips increases the readout granularity, while a special coding met
hod allows one to extract the address information from a small number
of analogue channels with very simple electronics. The principle is de
monstrated to be correct and a quite satisfactory performance is obser
ved. This method may help to create economically the large and fast re
adout systems necessary for high-luminosity colliders and synchrotron
radiation research. Also space-borne applications may profit from redu
ced weight and power requirements.
