Abstract
The OPAL experiment at the CERN LEP collider recently upgraded its sil icon strip microvertex detector from one coordinate readout (phi only) to two coordinate readout (phi and z). This will allow for three dime nsional vertexing and should improve lifetime measurements as well as b-jet tagging and identification. This paper describes the new microve rtex detector system with emphasis on the novel techniques and new com ponents used to obtain the second coordinate information. Some prelimi nary results on detector performance from data taken in the current LE P run are presented.
