We present a prototype of an X- and gamma-ray camera based on a semico
nductor crystal of mercuric iodide (HgI2) having a cross-sectional are
a of 10 X 10 mm2 and a thickness of 0.5 mm. Two orthogonal sets of 20
charge-collecting mustrips are deposited on the two opposite surfaces
of the detector giving a pixel size of 0.5 X 0.5 mm2. Using commercial
hybrid preamplifiers several experimental tests have been performed i
n order to assess the performance of this device. Preliminary results
on the spectroscopic capabilities together with an evaluation of the a
ttainable spatial resolution are presented.
