Investigations of the infrared and polarized Raman spectra of Cd(HCOO)
(2).2H(2)O reveal the presence of two crystallographically nonequivale
nt formate ions as separate frequencies are observed for each internal
mode. The symmetric CO2 stretching mode is observed in between the tw
o components of the in-plane OCH bending mode. There is a weakening of
the C-O bond due to a lone pair effect. The formate group is found to
bridge cadmium atoms in anti-syn configuration. Water molecules of tw
o different hydrogen bonds are present in the crystal.
