Abstract
This article considers the use of management agreements, as defined in the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981), to achieve conservation in t he countryside. Reference is made to experience gained in the Peak Dis trict National Park from 1981 to the present. Compensatory payments (f or loss of income) and payments for conservation achievements (payment by results) are contrasted.
