Spectral inversion in a semiconductor laser amplifier has been used, f
or the first time to the authors' knowledge, to achieve compensation o
f the chromatic dispersion in singlemode fibre. This was demonstrated
by transmission of a directly modulated, highly chirped 2.5Gbit/s sign
al at 1.5 mum across 100km of normal dispersion fibre.
