In this article, we discuss various specific colonic disorders that ma
y present with acute symptoms and physical findings. The initial secti
on describes some of the less common causes of obstructive colonic dil
atation and is followed by a section on nonobstructive dilatation of t
he colon. Several miscellaneous colonic disorders, including colonic p
erforation, leukemic complications affecting the colon, and pseudomemb
ranous colitis, are also reviewed.
