Abstract
Phase-induced intensity noise from weak multiple reflectors is evaluat ed theoretically and experimentally in amplifier cascades without isol ators. Rayleigh backscattering alone significantly limits the number o f amplifiers in the span. Theory and experiment agree closely for a si x-amplifier cascade.
