THE MINIMAX PRINCIPLE IN MECHANICS

The motion of the holonomic mechanical systems considered here takes p lace in a potential force field and is described by Lagrange equations of the second kind. It is shown that the solution of any problem invo lving these equations, whatever the conditions, is an extremal of a ce rtain functional whose structure depends exclusively on the Lagrangian and on the specified conditions.
