Early detection of central nervous system infections is essential in o
rder to initiate appropriate therapy. The nature of treatment-whether
medical or surgical-is dependent on many factors, including the findin
gs on imaging studies. These imaging studies (CT or MRI) are character
istically obtained with contrast enhancement. This article reviews con
trast enhanced studies on pyogenic, granulomatous, fungal, parasitic,
and viral infections. A description of the common infections seen in p
atients with immune deficiency is included in the manuscript.
