The automatic tuning of simple digital filters is discussed and an aut
omatic tuning method is proposed for the phase-lead and phase-lag comp
ensators in three steps. First, an appropriate test signal is automati
cally generated by introducing a nonlinear element into the system. Se
condly, the new gain crossover frequency and corresponding gain are es
timated. Thirdly, the compensator parameters are determined by corresp
onding formulae. The method can be easily implemented by microprocesso
rs and will be found useful in a variety of applications.
