An excimer band extending between 271 and 284 nm in indium vapor is re
ported which is the result of a two-photon resonant ionization of indi
um vapor excited by a dye laser tuned to the 6 2S1/2-5 2P1/2 atomic tr
ansition. The observations were made both in quartz cells and in a hea
t pipe oven at temperatures between 943 and 1223 K in the presence of
He, Ne and Ar buffer gases. The excimer state giving rise to the emiss
ion occurs at an energy which can be correlated with the In(7 2S1/2) a
nd In(5 2P1/2) separated atom states. No structure other than a degrad
ation to the blue is apparent in the spectrum.
