N-antipyryl-acrylamide monomer (NAA) (2,3-dimethyl-1-phenyl-5-oxo-3-py
razolin acryloylamine) was copolymerized with acrylonitrile in dimethy
l formamide using azobis-isobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The hom
opolymer and also the copolymers were characterized by a variety of sp
ectral and thermal methods. Thermogravimetry (TG) and differential the
rmal analysis (DTA) data showed a remarkable improvement in the therma
l behaviour of the investigated copolymers. A mechanism for the partic
ipation of the acryl-oyloxy units in the nitrile oligomerization is pr
oposed and confirmed by interpretation of the fragmentation patterns o
f the mass spectrum of the N-antipyryl-acrylamide (NAA) monomer and al
so the IR spectra of the copolymers after heating.
