Abstract
The Luttinger-Kohn canonical transformations are used to derive the ef fective band Hamiltonian for a quantum well. The transformations produ ce 8-function potentials in the effective-mass approximation. The boun dary conditions on envelope functions, obtained from this effective Ha miltonian, differ from the BenDaniel-Duke ansatz. The effective Hamilt onian depends on the electronic coherence length. It also has a veloci ty-dependent term that is proportional to the sum of band lineup energ ies.
