Structural and catalytic properties of Ti-IV/K10-montmorillonite and f
ine size anatase activated at different temperatures are compared. EXA
FS spectra at the Ti K edge and X-ray diffraction patterns show the fo
rmation of small TiO2 particles in the preparative process, which grow
up with the calcination temperature. The low catalytic activity of th
e fine size anatase clearly shows that the activity of the exchanged c
lay is due to the exchanged Ti-IV into the K10-montmorillonite. XANES
indicates that some of the titanium exchanged atoms would present a te
trahedral structure and consequently behave as a strong Lewis acid.
