This paper reviews the evolution of a flow visualization technique cal
led the photochronic dye method. This technique uses a photochromic dy
e in solution. The dye is activated along narrow lines by passing shar
ply focused UV light through the solution. The movement of the dye tra
ces are recorded, and velocities are determined from the resulting pic
tures. The use of various dyes in fluid flow experiments is discussed,
and a tabulated summary of the application of the technique to variou
s flows is presented.
