A double-blind, placebo-controlled study was performed to evaluate the
analgesic effect of rectal synthetic salmon calcitonin (sCT) 100 IU c
ompared with placebo in 60 patients suffering from bone pain secondary
to osteoporosis or to lumbar spine osteoarthritis. Patients recorded
daily their pain intensity by means of a visual analog scale. Results
showed gradual pain relief in the sCT-treated group starting from day
7 of treatment, while pain was unmodified in the placebo group. At the
end of the study, 88% of patients in the sCT group were pain free.
