Ordered ultra-thin films of poly(2,5-diheptyl-p-phenylene) (or DHPPP)
have been formed upon ordered substrates consisting of parallel chains
of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) on silicon (100) wafers. The electr
onic structure of the ordered DHPPP has been studied by angle-resolved
ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (ARUPS). The results indicate
that the aliphatic side groups of the DHPPP molecules are ordered para
llel to the PTFE chains, resulting in the PPP backbone lying at an ang
le of roughly 90 degrees to the PTFE chains.
