Polyacetylene films have been synthesized, using a Ziegler-Natta catal
yst and both decalin and liquid crystal solvents, on oriented poly(tet
rafluoroethylene) (PTFE) supports. The orientation has been probed by
optical and scanning microscopies and polarized ultraviolet spectrosco
py, with further characterization by Raman spectroscopy. Degrees of or
ientation theta=12 degrees and theta=35 degrees were obtained using th
e liquid crystal solvent and the simple decalin solvent, respectively.
D.c. conductivities of the order of 2000 S/cm were obtained upon dopi
ng with iodine.
