A classical study of the elastic scattering of He-4 from the Cu(117) s
urface is presented. The dynamics are shown to be chaotic for certain
values of the scattering energy and incident angle. As a consequence,
the deflection angle as a function of the initial impact parameter is
a multifractal. The structure of this fractal has been examined in det
ail. The relationship between chaotic scattering, trapping of trajecto
ries and selective adsorption resonances is also discussed.
