A significant problem with transforming elemental logging data into mi
neral proportions is the natural variation that can exist in the compo
sition of individual minerals phases. A modelling approach is introduc
ed that allows compositionally variable minerals to fluctuate within s
pecified statistical limits in the transform model. Such a stochastic
approach provides a ''geologically'' viable method for overcoming the
need to know, accurately, the composition of highly variable mineral s
pecies at each depth interval down-hole. The resulting computed minera
l assemblages have important applications in oil and mineral explorati
on.
