A newly developed isotope selective nondispersive infrared (NDIR) spec
trometer for the measurement of (CO2)-C-13 and (CO2)-C-12 concentratio
ns in breath samples was applied as a low cost and very simple to oper
ate alternative to isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). We used thi
s device for several biomedical applications ([C-13]urea breath test,
[C-13]leucine metabolism, [C-13]methacetin catabolism of rats) and fou
nd that the results agree very well with IRMS.
