Abstract
The feasibility of detecting fractured wires in steel cables using low -frequency mechanical waves (from approximately 10 to 100 kHz) and the pulse-echo technique is shown. The mechanical waves are transmitted i nto, and detected from, individual wires of the cable without direct p hysical contact using magnetostrictive sensors. Experimental data take n from steel cable specimens up to 45 mm (2 in.) in diameter are prese nted. Capabilities and potential applications of the method are discus sed.
