H-2 molecules in a vacuum chamber were nonresonantly ionized by an int
ense visible laser pulse, and the number of photoelectrons produced wa
s measured as a function of H-2 pressure. The signal intensity was pro
portional to H-2 pressure in the range from 1 x 10(-3) to 1 x 10(-6) P
a. The present result showed experimentally that the detection of lase
r-induced photoelectrons can be applied for the measurement of pressur
e in the ultrahigh-vacuum range.
