This paper examines the problem of constructing a similarity measure b
etween shapes of 3-D objects. For this purpose a shape distance betwee
n 3-D objects is defined on the basis of certain characteristic planes
of the objects. These planes normalize the orientation of the objects
. After normalizing the position, size (which are straightforward) and
orientation the shape distance is defined on the basis of the volume
of mismatch between the two objects. A novel property of this distance
is that it has a closed from solution and has all the metric properti
es.
