Abstract
A method for processing optical images is described together with expe rimental studies of the amplitude characteristics of the breaking of g ravity waves in a mature sea disturbance using this method. The breaki ng is shown to be of a highly isotropic nature (based on a model of a discrete random field) although the spectrum of the heights of the ene rgy-carrying part of the main sea disturbance is highly anisotropic.
