Abstract
The isolation and characterization of cofactor-independent phosphoglyc erate mutase gene from maize (Zea mays) is here reported. This gene se quence constitutes the first described from this enzyme. The gene span s 5.4 kilo base pairs and has nine exons in the translated region. Can onical TATA and CCAAT and Spl-like boxes are present upstream of the g ene. Comparison with cofactor-dependent phosphoglycerate mutase genes revealed no similarity between both groups of enzymes. (C) 1994 Academ ic Press, Inc.
