Fuel cells are expected to provide a new kind of power generator in th
e near future. They offer high efficiency power generation with little
air pollution. They are used to provide electrical power to telecommu
nications equipment and heat energy that is used by absorption refrige
rators to generate cooling water for air conditioning of telecommunica
tions rooms. Use of these systems is expected to help in reducing ener
gy costs, which have been increasing year by year, and in reducing env
ironmental pollution. This special issue outlines the latest situation
in research and development.
