The electrochromic behaviour of cobalt phthalocyanine [Co(Pc)] films h
as been studied using electronic absorption spectroscopy combined with
applied potential changes and cyclic voltammetry (where appropriate).
The cyan [Co(Pc)] films gave some interesting colours; green and yell
ow when reduced and magenta when oxidized. These are the 'complementar
y' colours and are essential for high resolution, front-view light ref
lection screens. During reduction of the film, evidence for a [Co(I)(P
c)]- anion in the films was found, before (Pc) ring reduction occurred
. Cycling the [Co(Pc)] films between reduced and neutral states was li
mited to a few thousand cycles.
