Abstract
The photochemical reactions of 4-methoxy-1-naphthonitrile, 1, with 2,3 -dimethyl-2-butene, 2, (E)-3-ethoxyacrylonitrile, 3, 2-chloroacrylonit rile, 4, and alpha-methylstyrene, 5, in ethyl acetate solution produce d the corresponding [2+2] cyclobutane adducts 6-9, respectively. Addit ion occurs at the 1,2-bond of naphthalene 1 with all of the ethenes in vestigated.
