From the whole plant of Coelogyne ochracea a new phenanthrene derivati
ve was isolated. This was shown to be 2,5-dihydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-phen
anthrene acid on the basis of spectroscopic data. This is the first re
port of the occurrence of a phenanthrene carboxylic acid in orchids, a
possible precursor of phenanthropyrones and pyrans.
