The relationship between surface rainbows and the onset of classical c
haos in atom-surface scattering is discussed. The principal focus is t
he onset of chaos as a function of experimentally controllable paramet
ers. The correspondence between the classical trapping and quantum mec
hanical selective adsorption resonances is briefly discussed. The conn
ection with the more mathematical work of Grebogi and co-workers is al
so considered. (C) 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
