The SU(3) symmetric chiral quark model, which describes interactions b
etween quarks, gluons, and the Goldstone bosons, explains reasonably w
ell many aspects of the flavor and spin structure of the proton, excep
t for the values of f(3)/f(8) and Delta(3)/Delta(8). Introducing the S
U(3)-breaking effect suggested by the mass difference between the stra
nge and nonstrange quarks, we find that this discrepancy can be remove
d and better overall agreement obtained.
