A convenient method was developed for the highly sensitive, quantitati
ve determination of glutathione (GSH) using high performance gel filtr
ation chromatography and fluorescence detection after N-(7-dimethylami
no-4-methyl coumarinyl)-maleimide modification of the peptides. The fl
uorescence detection method is highly sensitive and sub pmol GSH conte
nts were detectable. This method is applicable for determining the GSH
content of micro samples from higher plant roots.
