A finite half-life of T-1/2(2v) = 2.6(-0.5)(+0.9).10(19) yr(68%CL) for
the two neutrino double beta decay of Cd-116 to the ground state of S
n-116 was found for the first time by means of the ELEGANTS V detector
. Nuclear matrix elements for the two neutrino double beta decay was d
educed as M(2v) = (0.073 +/- 0.010)m(e)(-1) from the measured half lif
e. A stringent lower limit on the half life of neutrinoless double bet
a decay of Cd-116 to the ground state in Sn-116 was obtained as T-1/2(
0v) > 5.4 x 10(21)yr (68%CL).
