The aim of this article was to examine the nature of career problems,
drawing out common features that pervade any particular instance. On t
he basis of this commonality, a common standard for career counseling
theory, research, and practice was proposed. The significance of ident
ifying a common standard is that the field is so diverse in theory and
practice that there appears to be little basis for unifying perspecti
ve. Without a common standard or measure, there is no coherent way to
judge theoretical or practical progress.
