Abstract
A simple magnetic mass separator is described which can be inserted in a conventional field ion microscope in order to identify the mass of the imaging-gas ions. The mini-mass spectrometer has been designed to allow a mass separation of DELTAm/m almost-equal-to 0.1 from small sur face areas of as few as approximately 100 surface sites. An applicatio n to a FIM study of hydrogen oxidation on Pt will be given.
