A multi-oscillator ring laser of monolithic construction has been inve
stigated. The four modes of two circular polarizations and opposite di
rections are biased away from lock-in by using an out-of-plane cavity
and the Zeeman effect on the gain medium or a magneto-optic mirror. Fo
ur-mode operation and rotation sensing have been demonstrated, Means t
o cancel the applied bias are discussed, Measured bias and loss parame
ters are given for the polar and transverse Kerr effects for a multi-l
ayer dielectric mirror with a bismuth substituted yttrium iron garnet
coating.
