On average, women use television to follow public affairs at about the
same rate as men, but use the print media less. The gap in print medi
a use between the sexes has persisted for the last three decades, desp
ite increases in women's levels of education, employment, family incom
e, and representation in politics. This puzzle is examined by analyzin
g National Election Study data. An important reason the gap did not cl
ose was that while women's levels of education and family income did i
ncrease they did not improve relative to those of men.
