In this note monopsony effects in major league baseball are analyzed u
sing the highly competitive secondary market for players' baseball car
ds. By comparing the relationship between card prices and salaries for
free agents and non-free agents, a simple test of the monopsony hypot
hesis is obtained. Results are consistent with past studies showing mo
nopsony exploitation of non-free-agent players.
