Fifty-one house mice from the western part of the Czech Republic were
examined. Both morphological and biochemical investigations revealed t
he presence of M. domesticus, in the vicinity of the towns of Cheb and
As. On the contrary, M. musculus was only found in Kostelni Briza, a
village situated about 18 km east of Cheb. A hybrid zone was apparent
between the two species, running approximately in the north-south dire
ction through the study area. This is the first evidence of a stable p
opulation of M. domesticus in the Czech Republic.
