The ability to predict the stereochemical outcome of the condensation
reaction between a transition metal containing a complex of amino acid
derivatives and an aldehyde gives rise to the possibility of directin
g synthetic efforts toward the synthesis of beta-hydroxy-alpha-amino a
cids of known configuration. Four models for studying the role played
by the complex were reported previously. In this paper we describe app
lication of the models and the results obtained. The possibility of us
ing both a monomeric and a trimeric model with metal intervention is s
uggested. The calculated data were compared with some experimental res
ults and good agreement was found.
