Structural approaches to the synthesis of control systems are importan
t integral parts of process design especially during the early stage,
so that one can be aware of the controllability of the process under d
esign; assess the interactions between the potential control loops and
derive the possibly feasible regulatory control configurations. To ov
ercome the deficiency of previous structural methods, a modified struc
tural approach for synthesizing control systems is introduced based on
the concept of structural controllability and recent developments in
structural techniques. The simplicity and effectiveness of this approa
ch are demonstrated using the expanded Williams-Otto plant as a case s
tudy.
