F. Cotton et O. Coutant, DYNAMIC STRESS VARIATIONS DUE TO SHEAR FAULTS IN A PLANE-LAYERED MEDIUM, Geophysical journal international, 128(3), 1997, pp. 676-688
A complete set of expressions is presented for the computation of elas
tic dynamic stress in plane-layered media. We use a discrete-wavenumbe
r reflectivity method to compute the stress held radiated by arbitrary
moment-tenser sources. The expressions derived here represent an inte
resting tool for both the observational and theoretical analysis of dy
namic stress changes associated with earthquake phenomena. Dynamic str
ess changes associated with a strike-slip fault having unilateral rupt
ure are shown. This modelling, which is similar to the 1992 Landers Ca
lifornia earthquake, illustrates the effects of distance, directivity
and depth on transient stress changes.
